FedEx BCS National Championship

The BCS National Championship is almost finally here after a long season of controversy (whats new?) and thrills. The game features #1 Oklahoma vs. #2 Florida. It seems to be a thrilling match up in the making. There has been much hype about this game going in, especially with the 2 previous Heisman winners squaring off with each other.

I think the BCS system definitely got it right this time. Many people, including me do not agree with how college football is ran. There is the BCS system, which is used now to pick the bowl games, but many feel there should be a playoff system, that of the NFL.

Regardless, this championship game looks to be a good one. Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow: what more can you ask for right now? And the scary thing is, there are probably 20+ players combined that can be drafted this year, or make an NFL roster.

Both sides of the ball on both teams are stacked with talent, and gamers. From Gerald McCoy of Oklahoma, to Brandon Spikes of Florida, there are some great play makers that can make all the difference to this game from he defensive side. This game will be decided in the trenches, and ultimately how Tebow and Bradford preform.

Bradford must be flawless and allow his wide recievers and tight ends to recieve the ball in open spaces to make plays. These set of recievers include stand outs such as Juaquin Iglesias, Jermain Gresham, and Manual Johnson. Not to mention, Chris Brown, and DeMarco Murray, two 1000 yard rushers for Oklahoma are dangerous in every which way.

Tebow too must be just as flawless, if not more to beat Oklahoma and Bradford. Tebow will utilize his agressive running style on short yardage plays, but he must get to the ball to his playmakers. Louis Murphy, and Percy Harvin will be used to their fullest. Even though Harvin is only said to be 90 percent, he will still be used on most of the downs, including running plays.

Oklahoma is coming into the FedEx Championship Bowl with four straight BCS losses. This games looks to be a good one, but dont be surprised if it gets one sided and stays that way. Both teams have the ability to make that happen in this game, but with these strong defenses, it is not very likely. Stay tuned: Thursday, January 8th, at 8 pm on FOX.

Random Sports Thoughts

There's a lot of little things that I want to talk about so instead of blogging a few sentences on a couple different post, I'm just going to put them all in one. This has been a busy time in sports with baseball's hot stove, an NBA team on its way to being the best ever, and many teams fighting to get into the NFL playoffs.

The first thing I want to talk about is Jim Rome. I never really thought about if I were a fan or not until a few months ago when I caught his show almost everyday. Yes, this guy can say some strange things that make a viewer ponder, but he is entertaining to watch. His insults and subliminals are hilarious and he does bring up some interesting arguments. Besides who hasn't seen him pick a fight on his show with Jim Everett. Some people think that it was staged but even if it was, that's pretty cool. Here it is if you don't know what I'm talking about.

My next topic is the Boston Red Sox. What the hell are they doing up there? Their biggest rivals land the 2 biggest free agent pitchers and steal Mark Teixeira away from them. The only other big name out there is Manny and he obviously isn't coming back. They could sign somebody like Adam Dunn, but that isn't going to make the team that much better, even though Dunn hits bombs. Banking on an old player like Mike Lowell and a declining David Ortiz is not a smart decision. The Yankees offered Teixeira $180 million as opposed to Boston's $168 million. How about they stop being so cheap and dish out the extra $12 million for a player you desperately need. With the Yankees greatly improving and the Rays showing they are a legit contender, I expect Boston to miss out on the playoffs and finish 3rd in the AL East.

Donovan McNabb says that he wants a new contract from the Eagles after the season. Is he serious? Why would he want to stay on a team where the fans are losing faith in him, where he got benched in the middle of such an embarrassing season, where the team has missed the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years?(When the Eagles last made the playoffs McNabb wasn't even the QB) I'm not sure if he was just saying that because he wants to please Philly, but there is no way that this guys wants to stay there, or should stay there. If the Eagles don't can this guy after the season they are morons. So Eagles fans, sorry to diss your QB who you have pretended to like all these years. After all, he did win 0 championships.

How awesome would it be if Manny came to the Yanks. He could do what Marion Hossa did in the NHL. Hossa was the biggest free agent last year. He took a paycut, signed a 1 year deal with the Red Wings. Now he gets his 8 million and has an incredible chance of winning a Stanley Cup and then weill get his big contract next season. Manny, how does 1 year $10 million sound? Believe it or not, the Yankees can sign Manny and still have a lower payroll than last year!

A few other quick things....

The Celtics are nasty but I hope they don't break Jordan and company's 1996 record of 72-10.

My Super Bowl prediction: Steelers 21 Panthers 17.

I hope Tebow stays at Florida one more year, he's great for the college game.

Heisman winner

Saturday night, the Heisman trophy was presented. Only three players were invited this year opposed to last year when 4 were invited. These highly talented young men were Florida's Tim Tebow, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, and Texas' Colt McCoy. These three players have been putting up the numbers all year long, while leading their teams in the top 3 spots of the BCS. While Oklahoma and Florida will play for the National Championship, Texas will be playing in the Tostito's Fiesta Bowl on January 5, 2009 against Ohio State. But these teams would not be where they are today without these three player's contributions.

Tebow, last year's Heisman trophy winner, led the Gator's to the championship after an early season loss to Mississippi. Bradford, Oklahoma's super sophomore, has done nothing but amaze OU fans as well as college football fans all across the nation. Last but not least, the Longhorn's McCoy has led his team to wins over Oklahoma, Missouri, and Oklahoma State in consecutive weeks.

So how does one go about choosing a winner for the prestigious winner? What are the credentials? Just look at their numbers. If it were up to me, I would give all three of them the Heisman trophy so they all go home happy, but we all know that can not happen. But missing from these young men was Texas Tech's Graham Harrell. With a last second win over #1 Texas, Harrell put up the numbers all year that should have qualified him as a Heisman Tropy Candidate. However, the real writers did not feel him being qualified.

Sam Bradford was declared the winner on Saturday night for the 2009 Heisman Trophy. His numbers: 4464 passing yards, a 48:6 touchdowns to interceptions ratio. What is there more you can ask out of your quarterback during a season while leading their team to the top spot in football. Tebow took second, while McCoy took third. I wonder what Tebow will think come January 8 when him and Bradford face off for the championship. But one thing is for sure; Tim Tebow who had a vote in this year's Heisman say surely did not vote for anyone but himself who many feel should have deserved a second Heisman trophy this year.

Lets Talk BCS

This whole season I felt like Florida was the best team in the nation, even when everyone was talking about the big 3 from the Big 12 (Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech). And as it played out, there is no denying that the Gators deserve to be in the National Championship game. After a disappointing 1 point loss to Ole Miss, Tim Tebow put the team on his back and carried them to a dominant finish. Florida's win over Alabama without their star WR Percy Harvin convinced many they are the best team in college football.

What bothers me is who they got matched up with, the Oklahoma Sooners.( BTW, what the hell is a Sooner?) Anyway, I'm not saying that Oklahoma isn't a great team, because they are. I feel like they are going to be prepared and ready to play a solid game against Florida, but I also feel that there were two teams, Texas and Texas Tech, that were just as good who got snubbed. To me, the Texas Longhorn's are the most deserving team to play Florida because they beat Oklahoma by double digits on a neutral field.

This is why there HAS to be a playoff in college football. Every other sport uses some sort of a playoff system and its works great. If a playoff is put into effect in college, then every deserving team will have a shot to prove themselves fairly. Nobody has to get robbed of a championship game because they didn't have enough style points than another team. Plus, it would create more interesting matchups. I don't know what they're waiting for either. Most people want to see a playoff, and it is fair to every team. Even Coaches want to see it. Texas Tech coach Mike Leach went as far as suggesting a 64 team playoff, like college basketball. Maybe that is a little far fetched by the guy has the right idea. My prediction is that this will happen within the next few years because year after year, we see a deserving team get cheated out of a title game.
