Mets and K-Rod agree in principle

Finally some action from the Winter Meetings. It appears that K-Rod is headed to New York. Yesterday, I reported that the Mets had offered a 2 year, $24 Million dollar deal with a third year player option. However, the two sides continued negotiations, and according to MetsBlog Rodriguez’s agent and the Mets essentially agreed in principle late yesterday to a three-year, $36 million deal. The two sides are expected to finalize the deal later today, which could be announced in the next 24 to 48 hours.

This doesn't come as much of surprise to me. K-Rod made so much sense for the Mets, and the Mets essentially had the entire closers market cornered. I never bought into the idea that K-Rod wanted a 5 year, $75 Million contract, just like I never bought into the idea that the Mets didn't have enough prospects to acquire Johan Santana.

I don't think the Mets are out of the relief pitcher market just yet. I wouldn't be shocked if the Mets made a strong play for Huston Street, or even Brian Fuentes. But for the time being I am satisfied. Good work Omar Minaya
